You know me, I love Kung Fu movies as much as any fan, but having just seen the trailer for RZA's "Man With the Iron Fists," left me underwhelmed.
The trailer just made it look silly, mixing up genres of East and West (Russell Crowe plays a cowboy; RZA plays the title character with the iron fists) and doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. This could be a bad thing if they're trying to produce a serious action movie. There seems to be a trend in these genres remixes: "Tai Chi 0" is a steampunk/martial arts movie by Stephen Fung, coming out October 2012 in the US. If it is successful, look for the sequel, "Tai Chi Hero," in 2013. "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" is a detective story/martial arts/comedy disaster of a movie. I thought this 2011 movie was a real stinker. "True Legend" from 2010 is a fantasy/martial arts movie and it was billed as the first "3D Chinese Movie." This movie didn't do well at all, and after seeing it, it's not because of the lack of action - it's because there are some extremely unrealistic scenes. Plus, you never felt like you were in any real danger. Anyway, I could be wrong; maybe we're only seeing the stupid scenes from "Man With the Iron Fists." Maybe, just maybe, it'll be a great movie and I'm just judging a book by its cover. We'll see. |
